Remove MyStart by IncrediBar Search and Toolbar (Uninstall Guide)

Tell your friends:
For a few weeks now, we have been receiving an increasing number of emails from our readers asking us how to remove MyStart by IncrediBar search engine and the MyStart IncrediBar toolbar. We read all of the mail you send to us. Unfortunately, we are unable to respond to everyone individually.

Instead, we took a closer look at this issue and wrote comprehensive step-by-step removal instructions that apply to all Incredibar toolbars on all major web browsers: Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. If you don't want to read detailed analysis about this software and came here only for mystart toolbar removal instructions, please scroll the page down a bit.

If you do a quick Google search for MyStart by IncrediBar you’ll find many forum threads and posts about this toolbar. Surprisingly, most people think that they apparently ended up with the Incredibar MyStart virus, Trojan horse or some sort of malicious software. That’s not quite true. It’s a potentially unwanted application or a browser hijacker at worse if you like but not a virus. However, incredibar certainly won't go away that easy. That's why it's classified as PUA.

On the other hand, our readers confirmed that this toolbar causes unexpected web browser crashes, takes over the browser, substitutes Incredibar for the home page and http://mystart.incredibar.com for the search engine. Pretty much everything leads to MyStart page. It also redirects search results to their own search engine which is powered by Google (at least that’s what they say) and even displays annoying ads/pop-ups.

McAfee detects Incredibar installer as Heuristic.LooksLike.Win32.Suspicious.B. TrendMicro detects it as TROJ_ENCPK_0000009.TOMA and finally ESET also sees it as a threat Win32/ImInstaller potentially unwanted application.

Some behavior-based antivirus programs block My Start by IncrediBar too. So, even thought, it’s not a virus there’s definitely something wrong with this toolbar.

Incredibar toolbar is developed and published by Perion Network Ltd. They started in Tel Aviv about twelve years ago. Now they have an office in Redmond, WA. There are three version of this toolbar: essentials, music and games. We believe that he most popular is Incredibar Games. But Incredibar is not their only software product. They have other brands as well. First of all, the most popular product called Incredimail. It’s designed to enrich your emails with colorful graphics, animations, etc. If you choose to install Incredimail on your computer you may end up with MyStart by IncrediBar as well. Then there’s also a photo organization software product called PhotoJoy. Smilebox and even online safety and security software called Dr. CleanUp. We’ve never heard of it before.

MyStart by IncrediBar comes bundled with all their brand communication, photo sharing and safety products. What is more, this toolbar is distributed with the help of other freeware and shareware, codecs and HD video players. Most of the time, users can choose not to install this toolbar and we haven’t find any silent installers whatsoever. But we found a few reports indicating that this toolbar was distributed in rather misleading ways. In one particular case the user wasn't informed about the installation of this toolbar when he was installing a video converter. Image his surprise when MyStart by IncrediBar and the IncrediBar toolbar showed up on all web browsers.

IncrediBar toolbar can be uninstalled just by going to Control Panel and selecting Add/Remove Programs. But for some reasons, the folks at Perion forgot to mention that there’s also an application called Web Assistant. It must be uninstalled as well (see the removal instructions below). So, removing IncrediBar toolbar is not a big deal. But it’s a completely different story when it comes to MyStart by IncrediBar search page.

To remove MyStart by IncrediBar in Internet Explorer you need to manually remove the MyStart search engine provider and restore your default home page. It’s relatively easy. The same can be said about Google Chrome. You just need to manually remove IncrediBar extension and restore your default home page. But it really messes up with Mozilla Firefox. It modifies keyword.URL, browser.newtab.url and some other web browser settings. It goes without saying that most Firefox users don’t even know such settings exist and almost certainly do not know how to restore them. For example, if you won’t restore the keyword.URL string data value, you will be redirected http://mystart.incredibar.com when searching directly from the URL address bar. That’s really annoying.

For step-by-step instructions on how to remove MyStart by IncrediBar search engine and toolbar from your computer, please read the directions below. Please note, MyStart by IncrediBar and Incredibar settings apply to Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera. From what I've seen so far removing incredibar from chrome is probably the most challenging task. Not the toolbar itself but the changes it made to the browser. Uninstall mystart search from major web browser isn't that easy either. This is especially true for Mozilla Firefox. Too many changes are made and if you choose to reset your web browser to its default state, you will lose your bookmarks, save passwords and browsing history. If you have nothing to lose then yeah, save yourself time and reset it. But if you don't want to lose anything, then follow the removal instructions below. If you need further assistance with this issue, please leave a comment below. Good luck!

MyStart by IncrediBar toolbar removal instructions:

1. First of all, download recommended anti-malware software and run a full system scan. It will detect and remove this infection from your computer. You may then follow the manual removal instructions below to remove the leftover traces of this browser hijacker. Hopefully you won't have to do that.

2. Go to the Start Menu. Select Control PanelAdd/Remove Programs.
If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, select Control PanelUninstall a Program.

3. Search for IncrediBar* toolbar and Web Assistant in the list. Select the program and click Remove button. Remove both components!

If you are using Windows Vista/7, click Uninstall up near the top of that window.

Alternate removal: run C:\Program Files\Incredibar*\uninstall.exe

* This is the name of the toolbar you downloaded (i.e. Incredibar Games, Incredibar Essentials or Incredibar Music).

Remove MyStart by IncrediBar in Internet Explorer:

1. Open Internet Explorer. Go to ToolsManage Add-ons.

2. Select Search Providers. First of all, choose Bing or Live Search search engine and make it your default web search provider (Set as default).

3. Remove MyStart Search and Incredibar Customized Web Search web search providers. Close the window.

4. Go to ToolsInternet Options. Select General tab and click Use default button or enter your own website, e.g. google.com instead of http://mystart.incredibar.com. Click OK to save the changes. And that's about it for Internet Explorer.

Remove MyStart by IncrediBar in Mozilla Firefox:

1. Open Mozilla Firefox. Go to ToolsAdd-ons.

2. Select Extensions. Remove IncrediBar* toolbar. Close the window.

3. Click on the magnifying glass search icon as shown in the image below and select Manage Search Engines....

4. Choose MyStart Search from the list and click Remove to remove it. Click OK to save changes.

5. Go to ToolsOptions. Under the General tab reset the startup homepage or change it to google.com, etc.

6. In the URL address bar, type about:config and hit Enter.

Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue.

In the filter at the top, type: mystart

Now, you should see all the preferences that were changed by IncrediBar toolbar. Right-click on the preference and select Reset to restore default value. Reset all found preferences!

And that's it for Mozilla Firefox!

Remove MyStart by IncrediBar in Google Chrome:

1. Click on Customize and control Google Chrome icon. Go to ToolsExtensions.

2. Select IncrediBar and click on the small recycle bin icon to remove the toolbar.

3. Click on Customize and control Google Chrome icon once again and now select Settings.

4. Click the Manage search engines... button.

5. Select Google or any other search engine you like from the list and make it your default search engine.

6. Select MyStart Search from the list and remove it by clicking the "X" mark as shown in the image below.

That's it!

I am using firefox and have done what you have said - I can no longer see any program files, I have deleted the search engine from the top right corner, but it still messes with me adding new tabs at the top. My antivirus blocks the page that mystart wants to open when I open a new tab.
I do the about:config and there is 2 there when I search, but I cannot reset one of them... is there something I have missed?
Please help!

I have done all of this 5 times over and it still remains on FF - Chrome & IE are fine (thank you). Every time I restart FF the about@config new tab setting has reverted back to IncrediBar! Please can you help?

Thanks very much, Nicole

Outstanding: very detailed guidelines.
Thanks.
Worke well for me though niether of the two programs appeared in the applications list for uninstall. Instead Web assistant is among the Firefox Add-ons but the only action allowed is Disable, not Remove.

Anonymous said...

Thanks a lot for the detailed instructions. This was the only way to remove mystart incredibar permanently from the FF browser - I tried a lot other recommendations since the browser was infected but it didn't work out.

Best regard from Berlin, Rolf

Anonymous said...

Everybody should use mystart.incredimail.com as their home pages. It's much better than Google.com, in my opinion.

Anonymous said...

Instructions are great, but I'm also having the same problem with Firefox - each time I reopen the browser, the Incredibar search page comes back and I have to repeat the about:config. Is there any thing else I can do short of reinstalling Firefox?

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For Google Chrome I also had to do this!

Set your home page
You can set your favorite webpage as your home page and have it appear whenever you start up your browser. And if you add the home page button to the browser toolbar, you can click it at anytime to get to your home page.

Follow these steps to adjust your home page settings:

Click the wrench icon on the browser toolbar.
Select Settings.
Add the home button to the browser toolbar
Want a button on the browser toolbar that you can click to open your home page? Select the "Show Home button" checkbox in the "Appearance" section.
Set your home page
Pick the page you'd like to be your home page in the "Home page" section. You can select to use the New Tab page as your home page. To use another page, click Change once you've selected "Show Home button" checkbox.
Open specific pages when you open Chrome
You can choose to have Chrome open a set of pages upon launching Go to the "On startup" section and click "Set pages" to enter the web addresses.

One more satisfied visitor to your Blog. I don't know what I would have done without that clear guideline instruction - I am less angry with Mozilla FireFox than with the perpetrators "Incredimalware_whatever"
Naturally a bit surprised that Mozilla Support can't prvide us this solution directly, and even provide an update which protects users.
Guess we dont live in a perfect world.

I noticed in my case, MyStart took over the firefox default search on the new tab page as well. I was able to track it down to this file in my FireFox profile folder:

chromeappsstore.sqlite

There wasn't anything in there I needed, so I just copied a new version from a blank profile.

Here's the offending records in the above file:

moz-safe-aboutsearch-engine{"name":"MyStart Search","searchUrl":"http://mystart.incredibar.com/mb139/?loc=IB_DS&search=_searchTerms_&a=6OyGkwUghQ&i=26"}

I use Chrome most of the time and had done everything described. But on startup of Chrome, two tabs opened; one was my normal home page and the other was the Incredibar search page. I finally figured out the solution. In settings, On Startup, if you have the third box selected for page or pages, click on 'see pages.' The incredibar url was listed as the second page to open on start up. I deleted it there and it is now gone. Finally.

I followed the above step but still got the same problem... see the incredibar in another new tab.

Anyway, I could find the solution now!! You have to go to "Setting" and then choose "Extensions". If you see "New Tab for Chrome" extension, please disable it by uncheck the "enabled" checkbox next to the extension.

This is extension is not an original extension from Chrome. I could find it by checking thru another computer. There is NO extension named New Tab for Chrome so if you found it in your PC that means the fake one from incredibar.

For all of you who still get incredibar when you open a new tab:

Open a new tab

Type 'about:config' into the address bar

Done! And f*ck off Incredibar!

Same here, but thanks to this blog I discovered that the perp is that company Perion, and they stupidly insert a folder called Perion. I deleted that and now the friggin' incredibar is gone. But I wonder how I got infected in the first place. Is it bundled with something - I just reinstalled Adobe Shockwave for example, or could it be they have a deal with Facebook, Linkdin or someone? Anyone know?

<3 <3 you are my fucking hero.
But I'll add that I noticed something that was totally a blonde moment but I'm probably not alone on this:

I was looking for "Web Assistant" and "IB updater" totally flew by me until I noticed the icons were the same on this and Add/Remove programs. Then I connected the dots. Only when I went to uninstall did it say it was called "Web Assistant"; Probably a scare tactic. And they probably change the name. Keep an eye out.

FOR THOSE WITH THE NEW TAB PROBLEMS IN FIREFOX!

Upon doing the about:config, I scrolled through the list, because, well, just because. ;P I'm just like that. I noticed something called {336D0C35-8A85-403a-B9D2-65C292C39087}.ScriptData_WSG_blackList at the very bottom, all of which had things like "sethomepage" "setdefaultsearch" and the like after the number. I suspected it was related to mystart, so I googled the number and found it was part of the program, and it does not come up when you type mystart in the about:config search. You have to scroll to the bottom of the page. Anything with {336D0C35-8A85-403a-B9D2-65C292C39087} can be reset. Scroll back up to extensions. and you might see a huge and ridiculous list of, you guess it, incredibar. I think about 79 different extensions.incredibar. I had to reset. It was a real pain in the ass, but it removed it for me. I'm not one to comment on these, but opening a new tab to be extremely slow and annoying as I couldn't just type in the URL I wanted was driving me INSANE. This needed to be shared. I know how you all feel. Hope it works!

Jim Larana said...

I desperately need help!
I did all what was explained on this guide, there is nothing related to Incredibar in my computer nor in my browser (Google Chrome), no extensions, not in search engines, nowhere, but it still appears when I open a new tab. I even set an extension to have a star menu specified by me, but it just appears for 3 seconds an then "mystart.incredibar.com/?loc=CH_NT" appears.
Also I downloaded the extension "Personal block this", but doesn't matter that mystar.incredibar is to be blocked, it ignores the extension and still appears.

I can't get rid of this nightmare of spammer site.
Please help!

And I hope incredibar burns in hell!

Before I even came on here to find out how to remove this annoyance, I went into the control panel and removed. I followed the other steps after I found this. I shut down my computer and rebooted. This program is still popping up. I went into tools and settings to make sure everything was still performed and I don't see it anymore in tools and Google Chrome is marked to be my homepage. Please.... HELP!!!!!!!!

I did all but when I click New Tab than It comes back...Help!

For Chrome:
!!!Delete also "New tab for Chrome™ 1.0.0" extension!!!
or all new tabs will open with damned "IB mysearch" ("http://mystart.incredibar.com/mb192?a=6OySb5MvX5&loc=CH_NT" page will opens automatically)
Removing "New tab for Chrome™" was my latest step for killing this malware.

to let you know - I tried these instructions with Google Chrome, and Mystart.incredibar STILL kept opening when I open a new tab. I had to go into regedit and delete entries here too. Not good. What horrid software, and the company really is the pits to have to do this just to get their software used!!

please notice that in Chrome, under extensions - it's not always appearing as Incredibar Games. for me it showed something else that looks like it's google's extension. they fake a name the bastars

If, like me, you don't see anything about MyStart or IncrediBar in your extentions, you have to disable/delete the one entitled 'New Tab for Chrome'. NOTHING ELSE worked for me but this.

Anonymous said...

This kinda worked, but when i open a new tab, it automatically goes to incredibar search engine, and i have removed everything.

I have Windows 7 64-bit. I tried all the suggestions listed here for a removal of Mystart. Removed easily from IE. It took much longer from Chrome to remove, but even after 5 hours of redoing everything twice I am unable to get rid of Mystart in Mozilla FF. Some Incredibar files simply reinstall themselves. Any other suggestions but killing the computer? Thanks.
